Tears of Motherhood

Dear Motherhood,

Why do you have to be so hard?

I dreamed about you as a little girl, pretended to be you, longed for the day I would become you. Yet never in a million years did I ever comprehend the weight in which you bear. Never did I understand the depth in which you breathe, the tears in which you share.


Tears for the brokenhearted.
Those who have lost a precious one, whether through a choice of their own or because they were taken far to soon. Those who have spent years trying. Those who have faced death, never to be held again.


Tears for the struggles.
The late nights awake. The feelings of inadequacy. Watching them suffer and being helpless to take their pain away. The fights that break your heart. The wonders of what to do next.


Tears for the joys.
The joy in the silliness they bring and the laughter that follows. Joy in the first moments and the treasured moments. The joy of seeing your child succeed.


Tears for the love.
The deep love that goes deeper than any words could ever describe.The warmth of holding them in your arms. Your mother’s arms around you, holding you as you cry.


Motherhood, you are so much deeper than you pretend to be. Your pain is a bottomless pit, which makes your love an unfathomable measure. The emotions you hold, both good and bad, make a connection to which everyone in the world is tied.

So let me say today, dear motherhood, that the world would be lost without you. The gift of life you have been given, let it shine bright in the face of the pain it shares. And on the days when the weight seems impossible to bear, know this, that it’s o.k to not be o.k. Tears are not a bad thing. They are the depth in which make us real, in which our love shines brightest. Know as well, on the days when you feel all alone, that others have been there too. You are not alone. You are not forgotten.

For the one who ultimately gave you life is still alive and though He may seem distant, He is near to the brokenhearted. He knows the depth of the love we hold--for He is the one who created it. He didn’t put us in this world alone, so don’t try. He gave us others. Though it may be scary, never give up trying. Reach out to others and together may love and strength abound.

Today, Motherhood, may you treasure the simple moments. The smiles and laughter. The quick, or long hugs. The eyes of those around you, knowing they hold a story unique to them and if you care to listen, sometimes their tears whether happy or sad will bring with them the biggest blessings.
